When is the Best Time to Buy Christmas Decorations?

Holiday

If you’re excited about the holidays, you’re probably already thinking about getting your Christmas decorations out. Christmas shopping is almost always costly. It’s not just the Christmas gifts, but also the decorations that can make the holiday season jingle your wallet. You may have seen a few people buying Christmas decorations after the Christmas season has just passed. These people are trying to take advantage of the incredibly low prices and stock up for next year. While it may be significantly cheaper than purchasing at the beginning of the winter months, it isn’t always better. If you want the best deals as well as the best designs, you have to know the best time to buy.

Why You Shouldn’t Buy Christmas Decorations Right After Christmas

From December 26 until well into January, you could see Christmas decorations marked down between 50-80% from the original price. It often includes holiday ornaments, ribbons, wrapping paper, hanging lights, dancing Santa Clauses, and much more. However, most of the time the remaining decorations and gift-wrapping paper are “leftovers” for a reason. While you may find a few hidden gems on the top shelf, most of the end-of-the-season decorations are broken, bent, chipped, cracked, missing a piece, or just plain ugly. Some people treat Christmas decorations like knick-knacks and just collect whatever cute or interesting ones they can find. If you enjoy doing this, you may be disappointed if you wait until the end of the Christmas season, and realize all of the good tree ornaments, lights, or set-ups are all gone.

Waiting until after the holidays is also an unrealistic option for some people. Unless you decide to forgo the decorations this year, waiting until after the holidays doesn’t help you get into the spirit of the holidays. You’d have to wait an entire year before you get to enjoy your new decorations. Instead of waiting until after Christmas, you can find the brightest and best décor before Christmas. If you want to save some cash, you should consider buying your Christmas decorations in November.

Why You Should Buy Christmas Decorations in November

One of the biggest shopping days of the season, coincidentally the one with some of the best deals is Black Friday. Right after Thanksgiving, the holiday shopping season officially takes off. This isn’t just a great time to purchase Christmas gifts for your loved ones. If you scope out the right sales, you can also get great deals on holiday decorations for inside and outside of your home. While department stores and discount retailers may be your usual go-to, you should also check out the deals online. Online deals are especially exciting on Cyber Monday. It’s like a second wind of Black Friday, without having to physically grapple for the last sale item. Buying Christmas decorations online can be a little tricky, so be sure to check out the measurements and dimensions. Some stores provide sales before Black Friday, so be on the lookout throughout November for the best deals on Christmas décor. If you want a live Christmas tree, they are often offered at cheaper prices in the November months to boost sales. Come December, you may be paying about 20 – 50 dollars more for the same tree.

The holiday season isn’t just a time for giving and spending quality time with family and friends. For some Christmas lovers, the huge tree, the sparkling ornaments, the ribbons and all of the other trimmings are what set the mood for Christmas time. Christmas lovers will go all out on Christmas décor and  designs, going after the “wow” factor. If you’re that someone, then the best time to purchase Christmas décor is when it first becomes available. Some stores will begin to put their Christmas decorations as soon as September. These items may not be the best deal you would find; however, they are often slightly less expensive to drive sales. Come December, they may be a bit more expensive than originally priced.

The holidays are a renowned time for giving, but also for spending. Between holiday gift shopping, every store having sales, and increased electric bills, it is easy to break the bank. If you have a strict holiday budget and still want to be able to get some new decoration options, you can still save yourself some money if you follow these tips:

  1. Buy a pre-lit Christmas tree to help you save on electricity.
  1. Buy ornaments in bulk
  1. Find energy-saving Christmas lights. LEDs are the best.
  1. Only turn your Christmas lights on at night
  1. Shop online for simple and easy price comparisons

These little adjustments can help you save a few dollars to use toward a gift for yourself or someone you love.

Where to Buy Christmas Decorations?

If you’re hunting for bargain baubles and discounted décor, then you can find some pretty amazing Christmas decorations almost anywhere. From wholesale stores like Costco and Sam’s Club to home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s, you can get anything from large, animatronic blow-up Santa and snowmen, to bright, lighted reindeer and nativity scenes. You can also find some great deals at discount décor stores such as Home Goods and Tuesday Morning. However, be sure to budget your spending amount – it’s incredibly easy to go overboard at these stores because they have so much to offer.

If you’re into more crafty decorations, some of the best can be found at arts and crafts stores such as Joann’s Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, and Michael’s. These are also great locations to go if you have the knack and interest in making something unique for your own home.

If you want something that’s not mass-produced, and a little more on the homemade end of the spectrum, farmer’s markets and online marketplaces such as Etsy can have some very unique designs that you won’t find anywhere else.

If you want to keep up with holiday trends and be sure you’re getting the latest and greatest of holiday décor, you should consider finding a Macy’s Home & Furniture, or IKEA near you. Whether you like modern, minimalistic, vintage, or have your unique style, these stores always have stylish and upscale designs, but they also have upscale prices. If you’re interested in finding a happy medium between style and price, try searching at your local Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Kohl’s, or even online at Amazon.
